THE SECRET CITY
Like practically every other kid who grew up in the 80's, I was exposed to a wealth of PBS educational kids' shows that may or may have not been dreamed up by adults who did a lot of hallucinogens a decade or two prior. A client of mine who likes to get in my head and figure out how I tick, asked me point blank the other day, how I 'got into' art.
I've had a few wonderfully influential teachers, obviously learned a lot from my time in the business, but it all pretty much traces back to that fateful day in 1985 or '86 when I had just gotten done with a swimming lesson after school, came back inside, The Secret City came on TV, and thought it was thee coolest thing I'd ever seen. Space stations and underground tree caves full of unibears were way cooler than Bob Ross. I giddily grabbed a pencil and a piece of paper, and from that point forward, never gave a second thought to doing anything else with the rest of my life.
Obviously, nearly 25 years later, I'm pretty much infinitely indebted to Commander Mark and his ability to break 3D space down into simplicity itself, so before it's completely lost to the short attention spans of time, I decided to honor The Secret City by giving it a modern make-over. Working painstakingly from blurry youtube videos of blurry VHS tapes, I created a re-vamped version of the original Secret City typeface and logo, and also whipped up an illustration of Commander Mark's bumbling assistant, Zebtron, who undoubtedly inspired the Blue Man Group.
